Top 10 things I'm taking with me from my summer internship

So, Today is my last day as an editorial intern at Syracuse New Times. I am beginning a fall internship at Elle Magazine on Tuesday of next week, so off to NYC in (wow) two days! I figured I'd leave you my top 10 things I'm taking with me from my internship at the newspaper and a little bit of advice for all you that are heading into your first internship. I hope you get as much out of yours that I did from mine!

  1. People love when you say hello, ask them how they are, and if there's anything you can do!
  2. If you have ideas, give them! I have so many published clips I'm now leaving with, and my portfolio looks great.
  3. I got to see how a newspaper is put together, right in front of my eyes.
  4. Dress up- always. I received compliments all the time. No jeans, even if other editors are wearing them!
  5. Just because it's not paid, doesn't mean it's not a real job. It is, and we're here to work!
  6. Remember to always be polite. If you're going to go in and talk to an editor, knock. If you need something to do, ask. Always use your P's & Q's.
  7. Just because you're working in a certain department, doesn't mean you can't branch out. I work next to the music editor, and I sparked up conversations with her, letting her know what artists I liked, etc. and got her contact info. This way, now we can keep in touch and I could help her with music stories, too.
  8. Don't expect too much. Don't think you are going to come in and get published every week. I worked at a small weekly newspaper, in a somewhat small city, so I got very lucky with the amount that I was published. You may be getting coffee for two months before you even get to edit a piece. Again, you're there for the experience and to do the job of the intern.
  9. That being said, refer to #2. You can still pitch ideas, or at least speak with your boss or coworkers about doing more.
  10. Have fun & LEARN! You're there for credit/money/experience-- make the best out of it, and have a good time while taking in as much information as possible.
Good luck, fellow interns.
